Believe or Not Believe

We are born into this world with a longing to be loved. We can’t help it. We can’t stop it. It is a part of being human. It will never go away. So many live their whole life without experiencing the love they were created to know. Many who make a connection with God never strain hard enough to discover that His love is the love they have been searching for all their lives. All those promising relationships, first with parents, then teachers, caregivers, girlfriends and boyfriends, husbands and wives. None of these relationships reach their full potential until you know that you are loved by God.

When you stop and let it sink in; it is overwhelming to realize the love God describes He holds for us. As I cleaned out my round brush blow dryer this week. The picture is kind of gross. Besides the fact that I lose a lot of hair in my round brush, it made me sit down and to take in how God describes about his love for me. I wondered how long it might take me to count the hair I had lost in the last months since I cleaned my brush. God tells me that He knows the number of hairs I have on my head (Matthew 10:30). It made me think about my husband. He loves me so much. But I can tell you for certain that he would never in a hundred thousand years stop and try to count the number of hairs on this brush alone, not to mention counting the hair on my head that is changing every day! God knows me and loves me more than any person I could ever meet. Yet, I spend so much of my time trying to get love from people who could never love me even a small fraction close to how much God loves me.

It’s so easy to dismiss God’s love and drive myself trying to get love from empty cisterns. J.I. Packer wrote: “Your faith will not fail while God sustains it; you are not strong enough to fall away while God is resolved to hold you.” That has got to be true from a God who says He knows the very number of hairs on my head. That’s incredible enough, but He knows the number of hairs on your head too, and everyone who is reading this and actually everyone in the world. Why do I have such a difficult time believing that love? The only reason I can even come close to seeing His love like that is because He is so consistent and pursuing me and showing me that His love has been there all along. I John 4:10 says:

“In this is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

His is a love that will not let me go. We could never think up how much God’s love will hold us. We need to read His words to us that describe His love. Every page of God’s Word reveals the love of God. Even the pages where He is describing the judgments from our own sins. Though I may be impossible to love, God has found a way to love me.
