All the Time

God is good!–all the time. From the beginning of time God has demonstrated His goodness. God proclaimed daily creation acts as being good in Genesis 1. Though the reality of sin has invited badness into time, each day still contains the goodness of God. We are given time on earth to take in God’s goodness. Psalm 34:1 says:

“I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.”

Each day is full of goodness. Sometimes you just need to stop and think before you can find the good that He sends into your life on a daily basis. Losing faith in the goodness of God is the beginning of sickness of soul. Souls that can’t see God’s goodness begin to search for pleasure, work, wisdom, power, and many other remedies from the world. It is only the goodness of God that will satisfy a soul. A day without recognizing the goodness of God is a day wasted. King Solomon wrote:

“When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider this: God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, no one can discover anything about their future” (Ecclesiastes 7:14).

As I begin each day and I think back on the twenty-four hour period that just past, I remember and write down the ways in which I saw God’s goodness to me. This has become a life-giving spiritual discipline that encourages my soul. It’s easy to allow the hard realities of life to weigh us down. We may not even think we are going through a particularly difficult time. It’s just the everyday getting the bills paid, food made, and making it to work on time efforts that desensitize us to the tiny treasures each day holds. If you can’t see your God-gifts in each day of time, it will affect your soul.

God is good all the time, but we only notice it some of the time. My spiritual practice helps me take in time in a different way. I start the day thinking about the time I just lived—the past twenty-four hours. At first time seems ordinary. Nothing really stands out. Sometimes it has been a particularly hard day. But every day, every measure of time has something good hidden inside. I guess I wanted to prove a point to myself as I am writing it to you, so I went to my calendar from last year and looked up the worst day of that year (it was pretty bad), and there I wrote about a true gift of God. In the midst of the darkness, God showed me His goodness. He gave me a moment for which to be truly grateful.

It’s easy to waste time by wishing for what that measure of time did not bring or by overlooking what good it did give. God is good all the time. His goodness will never lapse. It is up to us to find the goodness of God in the time we are given.
